SPY 5-Day Sell vs 25-Day Buy: ETF Technical Signals After the August 28 Close

SPY 5-Day Sell vs 25-Day Buy: ETF Technical Signals After the August 28 Close

Disclaimer: This post is for informational purposes only and does not constitute financial advice. I am not a professional financial advisor. Technical signals can fail. Do your own work before you risk capital.

Published Saturday, August 29, 2026

The tape after Friday’s close is not a one-way tape. The models still lean bullish from 15 to 30 trading days on the large-cap indexes and on several economically sensitive sectors. They do not lean bullish over the next five sessions. SPY, UPRO, URTY, XLY, and XRT all print short-horizon sells. That split is the story this week.

Overall Market Insights

SPY closed Friday at 769.35, about 1.3% under the August 13 high. The 5-day signal flipped from BUY last week to SELL this week. The 25- and 30-day signals remain buys. UPRO, the 3x S&P vehicle, repeats the same pattern: SELL at 5 days, BUY at 20/25/30. That is a near-term fade inside a still-constructive intermediate trend, not a regime change.

QQQ did not print a 5-day signal. It did print BUY at 15 and 25 days and a weaker buy at 30. XLK supports that with buys from 10 through 30 days. The Nasdaq complex is no longer the clean short-term long it was on August 21. It is an intermediate long if the 5-day index weakness stays contained.

Breadth underneath the indexes is uneven. DIA and IWM cluster buys from 15 days out. KBE only shows a 30-day BUY. Financials (XLF) are a 15-day buy and a 30-day BUY. Materials (XLB) and staples (XLP) are the cleanest multi-horizon long clusters on the sheet. Energy (XLE 5/15 BUY, XOP 5/10/20/25 buys) stays bid. Homebuilders and retail do not.

Highlights of Bullish and Bearish Signals

Bullish clusters: XLP (5, 15, 20 BUY; 25 buy), XLB (5, 15, 20 BUY; 30 buy), XOP (5 and 20 BUY; 10 and 25 buy), XLK (10 and 20 BUY; 25 and 30 buy), QQQ (15 and 25 BUY), DIA (15 and 20 BUY; 25 and 30 buy), UPRO 20–30 BUY, XBI 20–30 buys.

Bearish clusters: XRT SELL at 5 and 10 days. XHB SELL at 15 and 20 days. XLU SELL at 10 and 15 days. XLY SELL at 5 days against a 30-day BUY. SPY/UPRO/URTY SELL at 5 days. XLRE is split: BUY at 5 days, SELL at 15.

GLD, TQQQ, and XLV printed no All-column signal on any horizon. Neutral is the call. Do not invent one.

Comparison to the August 22 Sheet

Last week the 5-day column was still long SPY, UPRO, QQQ, XLK, XLF, and DIA. Those 5-day longs are gone. SPY 5 and UPRO 5 reversed from BUY to SELL. QQQ 5 and XLK 5 went blank. XHB 15 reversed from BUY to SELL. JNK 20 reversed from SELL to BUY. XLRE 5 reversed from SELL to BUY. XOP added 5- and 20-day BUYs. The sheet got more defensive on the very front of the curve and stayed constructive behind it.

Consensus Signal Table

Green = buy. Red = sell. Bold capitals = all three model families (A, P, and N) agreed. Lowercase = All-column signal without a full three-way lock. Em dash = no signal.

Indicators behind the sheet include APO, DMI, MACD, MFI, Parabolic SAR, RSI, SMA crossovers, the Stochastic Momentum Indicator, Time Series Forecast, and the Ultimate Oscillator. The All column fires when the three internal families line up or when two fire and the third is blank. Back-test hit rates on the file run from about 0.61 on the 5-day BND print to above 0.80 on several 20- to 30-day rows. Those are historical hit rates on the model, not promises.

Strong Consensus Trends & External Confirmation

SPY 5-day SELL / 25-day BUY. StockInvest.us rates SPY a Hold after the August 28 close, with a sell signal from the August 13 pivot and a 3-month MACD sell against buy signals from the short- and long-term moving averages. That matches a short-horizon fade inside an intact uptrend. Reuters technical desk (Aug. 26) put the S&P 500 within 1.6% of the August 13 record close and flagged 7,550–7,620 as the support cluster that has to hold before another record attempt. The 5-day SELL does not fight that map. The 25-day BUY assumes that cluster holds.

XHB 15- and 20-day SELL. Benzinga (Aug. 26) — “Housing Demand Is Cracking. These ETFs Could Be Next to Feel the Heat” cited a 10.5% drop in July new-home sales, 30-year mortgage rates near 7%, and weaker purchase applications. That article agrees with the SELL. StockInvest.us (Aug. 27) still tags XHB a Hold, not a Sell, after a 1.4% down day. That is a partial contradiction: weak tape, not a completed breakdown.

XLU 10- and 15-day SELL. Dow Jones via Morningstar (Aug. 28) reported utilities down after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s hawkish Jackson Hole remarks lifted the odds of a September hike and pushed yields up. Rate-sensitive utilities sold. The SELL on XLU lines up with that session.

XOP / XLE BUY cluster. Seeking Alpha (Aug. 27) — “There Are A Number Of Reasons I Continue To Like The Energy Sector” argued energy has led U.S. equities in 2026 on tighter supply and rising 2027 earnings estimates. That agrees with the BUY cluster. Morgan Stanley via TheStreet (Aug. 25) called crude the asymmetric near-term risk to stocks and raised its Brent path toward $90–$100. That supports the energy long and also explains why a 5-day SPY SELL can sit next to an energy BUY.

XLP BUY cluster. Motley Fool (Aug. 22) treated XLP as the straightforward defensive staples vehicle on cost and track record. Motley Fool (Aug. 28) noted staples still lag the S&P 500 in 2026 and used that lag as a value case, not a trend case. The models are buying the lag. That is agreement on direction, not on why.

XRT 5- and 10-day SELL. Discretionary (XLY) is also a 5-day SELL. The Census Bureau’s Aug. 18 e-commerce release showed Q2 online sales still growing, so the SELL is a technical read, not a collapse in the official retail data. Treat it as a 5- to 10-day tape call, not a verdict on the consumer.

Strong Buy/Sell Call Highlights

Every All-column buy or sell published in prior weekly files is scored with Polygon adjusted closes. Signal date is the last U.S. equity session before the CSV date. Horizon is trading days, not calendar days. Realized return is the price move in the direction of the call (positive = the call made money). Ratings: great = more than +2.0%; better = +0.5% to +2.0%; flat = between −0.5% and +0.5%; bad = −0.5% to −2.0%; ugly = worse than −2.0%.

Directed win rate (great + better versus bad + ugly) is 54.4% on 114 decided trades. Across every matured call since the June 13 file, the same directed win rate is 55.7% (162 wins, 129 losses, 44 flats).

Recent hits worth owning in the record: UPRO 20-day BUY from July 24 closed +9.99%; XLY 10-day BUY from July 24 closed +9.55%; XLE 15-day BUY from July 31 closed +6.87%; XBI 5-day BUY from August 14 closed +5.29%. The 5-week book is still slightly better than a coin flip. August 1 was the weak sheet. August 8 and August 22 pulled the average back up.

Nothing in this post is a recommendation to buy or sell any security.

SPY, QQQ, XLK Technical Signals August 22 2026: Where the Strong BUY and SELL Calls Stand

Disclaimer: This analysis is for informational purposes only and does not constitute financial advice. I am not a professional financial advisor. Technical signals can fail. Past performance does not guarantee future results. Always do your own research and consider your risk tolerance before making any investment decisions.

Data for this post comes from the post-close analysis spreadsheet dated August 22, 2026 (signals based on the August 21 close). The model evaluates Absolute Price Oscillator (APO), Directional Movement Index (DMI), MACD, Money Flow Index (MFI), Parabolic SAR, RSI, SMA crossovers, Stochastic Momentum, Time Series Forecast, Ultimate Oscillator, and related tools across 5- to 30-day horizons. Focus stays on the “All Buy or Sell” column: “Buy” treated as strong BUY, “Sell” as strong SELL.

Overall Market Insights

Broad market ETFs show a tilt toward strength int 15-20 days. SPY, DIA, QQQ, and XLK have BUY signals between 5 and 30 days. Small-cap and regional bank exposure (IWM, KBE) are bullish on 15- to 30-day windows. Energy-related names (XOP, XES, XLE) remain buys on intermediate horizons. The Bond ETF (BND) and utilities (XLU) show the opposite: SELL pressure. Housing (XHB) is mixed—SELL at the extremes, BUY in the middle.

Compared with the August 15 reading, the bullish bias on technology and financials has broadened while the short-term energy BUY signals have thinned. BND SELL signals remain consistent across longer horizons.

Consensus Signal Table

Green = BUY (strong). Red = SELL (strong). Blank = neutral or inconclusive.

Strong Consensus Trends & External Confirmation

XLK (Technology Select Sector) – BUY signals on 5, 10, 20, 25, and 30 days. The multi-horizon cluster is the strongest equity signal this week. Recent coverage remains constructive on the sector’s intermediate path. AltIndex’s model (updated August 21) projects an 8% upside over six months for XLK, citing improving fundamental and technical scores.

KBE (SPDR S&P Bank) – BUY on 15, 20, 25, and 30 days. Regional-bank exposure continues to show intermediate strength after earlier volatility.

XOP (SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production) – BUY on 10, 15, 20, and 25 days. Technical still flag a bullish structure. Intellectia’s multi-indicator scan (August 20) labeled XOP a “Strong Buy,” with price above its 60- and 200-day averages despite an elevated RSI.

SPY / QQQ / DIA – Multiple BUY signals across mid time frame. Benzinga’s August 21 technical note highlighted SPY support near 765 and QQQ near 715 as key pivots; a hold above those levels keeps the short-term intact. Seeking Alpha pieces from August 16–20 continue to frame the S&P 500 path as bullish toward higher levels, mentions earnings growth and liquidity.

BND (Vanguard Total Bond Market) – SELL on 15, 25, and 30 days. Longer-horizon pressure on the aggregate bond ETF remains consistent with the prior week.

Sources used this week have not appeared in previous posts.

6-Week ETF Technical Analysis Review (August 1, 2026)
Disclaimer: This analysis is for informational purposes only and does not constitute financial advice. The author is not a professional financial advisor. Technical indicators and model outputs can and do fail. Past performance of signals does not guarantee future results. Always conduct your own due diligence and consult a qualified advisor before making investment decisions.

The August 1, 2026 spreadsheet reveals a clear rotation away from technology and toward energy, financials, and retail. QQQ prints a multi-horizon Sell consensus for the first time in weeks, while energy names (XOP, XLE) and regional banks (KBE) generate the strongest clustered Buys. Bond proxies remain under pressure and housing (XHB) shows intermediate weakness.

Overall Market Insights

Energy leads the bullish side. XOP posts Buy signals at 5, 10, 20 and 30 days; XLE is constructive across four horizons. Financials stay firm — KBE remains one of the cleanest multi-horizon Buys (5/15/20/25), joined by XLF at shorter-to-intermediate windows. Retail (XRT) continues its strong run with Buys at 15 through 30 days. The Dow (DIA) holds intermediate-to-long Buys.

On the bearish side, technology is the standout deterioration. QQQ now shows Sell consensus at 15, 20 and 30 days, with TQQQ and XLK also flashing intermediate Sells. Bonds (BND, JNK) stay in Sell mode. Housing (XHB) is weak at 5/20/25 days before flipping Buy at 30. Gold (GLD) and metals (XME) remain under pressure.

Compared with the July 25 reading, the most important shifts are the new multi-horizon Sell on QQQ and the strengthening of energy (XOP/XLE). KBE and XRT Buys have persisted for multiple consecutive weeks. The model continues to favor cyclicals and financials over pure growth.

Strong Consensus Trends & External Confirmation

KBE (Banks) – multi-horizon BUY (5/15/20/25-day)
Regional banks remain one of the most persistent Buy clusters. Independent technical services show mixed short-term readings but the longer-term structure stays constructive, with the ETF trading above its 200-day average and holding a general buy bias on multi-timeframe analysis. The model’s continued multi-horizon Buy aligns with the sector’s relative strength versus growth names.

XOP & XLE (Energy) – strong Buy clusters
Energy is the clearest new leadership theme. XOP prints Buys at four horizons; XLE is constructive across short and intermediate windows. Recent analyst commentary has turned more constructive after oil’s rebound, with Oppenheimer classifying the energy sector as “tactically attractive.” Energy equities have been among 2026’s stronger performers on a year-to-date basis, supporting the model’s Buy signals.

QQQ (Nasdaq-100) – multi-horizon SELL (15/20/30-day)
Technology shows the most notable deterioration. Multiple technical services now rate QQQ a Strong Sell on daily moving averages and oscillators. Weekly technical notes describe a corrective structure with scope for further downside toward key support zones. The model’s new multi-horizon Sell consensus matches the recent price action and independent technical deterioration.

XRT (Retail) – BUY at 15/20/25/30-day
Equal-weighted retail continues its multi-week Buy streak. The persistence of intermediate-to-long Buys suggests the model still favors this cyclical exposure even as broader growth weakens.

BND & JNK (Bonds) – continued SELL
Fixed-income proxies remain under pressure with Sell consensus at multiple horizons. The pattern has been consistent for several consecutive readings and continues to reflect the relative preference for equities over bonds in the current model output.

Overall Market Insights

The July 18, 2026 technical analysis spreadsheet reveals a constructive bullish bias across major U.S. equity ETFs, with consistent buy signals in broad market proxies and select sectors. SPY and DIA display buy indications across multiple short-to-medium horizons. Small-cap IWM shows a clear shift to buy consensus for 15–30 day periods after a short-term sell at 5 days. Banking (KBE) and utilities (XLU) stand out with robust multi-horizon buy signals, suggesting sector strength in financials and defensives. Bond ETFs (BND, JNK) maintain sell signals on 10+ day horizons, pointing to ongoing pressure in fixed income. Leveraged tech (TQQQ) and metals/mining (XME) show pockets of sell signals, indicating caution in those areas. Overall accuracy metrics (Back Test Avg Correct Call) remain solid in the 0.72–0.88 range for most ETFs with active signals.

Bullish Signals (Key BUY Consensus)

  • KBE (Banking): Strong buy consensus across 5-day and 15–25 day horizons. Backtest accuracy ~0.74–0.83. Indicates technical momentum in regional banks.
  • XLU (Utilities): Consistent buy signals from 10 through 25 days. Backtest accuracy 0.74–0.87. Defensive sector strength with rate-sensitive appeal.
  • IWM (Small Caps): Clear buy shift for 15–30 day horizons (Sell only at 5 days). Backtest accuracy 0.75–0.88. Small-cap outperformance potential building.

Bearish Signals (Key SELL Consensus)

  • XES (Energy Services): Mixed but sell-heavy at 10, 15, and 30 days despite short-term buy.

Comparisons to Prior Data (July 11 & July 3, 2026)

Patterns from the July 11 and July 3 analyses remain largely intact. IWM's longer-horizon buy signals have strengthened slightly. KBE continues its strong multi-period buy profile. XLU buy consensus has become more consistent across 10–25 days compared to early July. SPY buy signals are more aligned now versus mixed readings in early July. Bond sell pressure (BND/JNK) persists without meaningful change. Small-cap and banking bullishness appears to be building on the technical foundation established in prior weeks. Overall backtest accuracies remain in a healthy 0.70–0.88 band with modest improvement in equity buy calls.

Strong Consensus Trends & External Confirmation

Several ETFs exhibit strong multi-horizon consensus. KBE shows buy signals across four horizons with backtest accuracy 0.74–0.83. XLU displays buy across four consecutive horizons (10–25 days) with accuracy up to 0.87. IWM has flipped decisively bullish for 15–30 days. These represent the clearest strong buy clusters in the July 18 data.

A review of recent market commentary and analyst notes around mid-July 2026 highlights ongoing optimism in regional banking recovery and utility sector resilience amid infrastructure themes and potential rate dynamics. These narratives broadly align with the technical buy signals for KBE and XLU. No significant contradicting technical or fundamental discussions were identified that would undermine the current consensus. Bond weakness narratives also remain consistent with the persistent BND sell signals.
